Regents Park

A right royal living environment

When a Christchurch couple were about to embark on a new build – their fourth residential building project – they knew instinctively who to call. “DJ Hewitt was our obvious first choice”, the owner says. “He has a high profile and a great reputation. We had seen many of his projects and when we met him, we immediately got on really well”.

In a competitive building environment, establishing and maintaining a positive profile and a fine reputation is no easy feat.  Success comes from delivering extraordinary projects on time, every time.  Continued outstanding results help to gain awareness and attract new clients.

The ‘totally usable’ home they have created for themselves and their two teenage sons is large, lavish and superbly presented. Set on a generous site in the prestigious Regents Park subdivision, the generous home includes five bedrooms, a hotel-styled guest suite, an outdoor dining area and garaging for eight cars. Factor in the heated lap pool and the tennis court and you get some idea of the scale and resort   like feel of home and garden set on a 2900 square metre site.

Planning involved a long term collaboration between the owners, Daryl Hewitt and Darren O’Neil, the architectural designer. The owner says, “I hate to think how many meetings we had.  We took a lot of their advice, and it was great throughout the whole design and build process. Because of the scale of the project and the budget involved, there were many things to consider as well as many people involved along the way”.

Thanks to the reliability and quality of the tradespeople and subcontractors, the single DJ Hewitt-appointed site manager who project-managed the entire build and the over-arching management by Daryl, there were no issues with the project team. Mother Nature did, however, upset the project planning and delivery schedule. Building started in early 2010 and there were a few delays due to the September earthquakes.  Although the earthquake created only minor damage to the house structure, the pool and decking area required significant remediation. The owners were impressed by how well the structure fared in the earthquakes and attribute the outcome to the excellent workmanship of the team involved in the project.

“Everything was perfect”, says the owner. “We had no issues whatsoever. With Daryl’s professional approach and reputation, you know that no scallywags are going to get past the door”.

The standard of finish throughout the home is superb. African granite benchtops and splashbacks are stunning and immense glass recessed sliders glide back and forwards silently to provide a barrier between living areas on the ground floor. The home is perfectly positioned to withstand the prevailing easterly wind. Hard landscaping features are in keeping with the strong architectural lines of the home and act as barriers to inclement weather conditions. Outdoors, over-height glass windbreaks, plastered and stone clad walls, and an expansive pergola over the al fresco poolside barbecue, spa pool and dining area provide privacy and shelter from the elements.

The generous double-height entrance foyer suits the proportions of home and glass balustrades on the upper level overlooking the atrium enhance the spacious interior feel. The ground floor is dedicated to living and entertaining. An informal lounge adjacent to the guest suite opens to the pool. The ensuite bathroom can be accessed from inside and outside providing a practical solution to the problem of wet-footed guests having to walk through carpeted areas to get to the bathroom. All the bathrooms are fully tiled. Upstairs, the master suite overlooks the garden and pool. Three additional bedrooms, bathrooms and extensive storage complete the package.

The owners have been in residence for five years and have no intention of starting a fifth building project any time soon.  The home is ideal for their entertaining lifestyle as well a great magnet for their sons’ friends.

“We love it here; we plan to be here for a while”.
